It’s A Family Affair

This past weekend was easily the busiest weekend we’ve had in as long as I can remember.  Between the full house, party prep, two baby showers, puppy potty training, a graduation party and Grace’s birthday party, we were on the GO!  I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m complaining because I loved every minute of it!  It’s a rare occasion when Dean, Chris and the Orozco cousins are all in town at the same time AND we have the opportunity to see friends that we haven’t seen in forever.  Come Sunday we were exhausted for sure but we also felt very blessed to have such beautiful people in our lives.

Baby boy’s first bath :)

Below are some pictures of Nathan’s graduation party.  My auntie Maine is the hostess with the mostest and she certainly knows how to throw a party.  I love the Otero parties because I get to see the entire family (you know those distant relatives you only see every 5 years or so)!  All us Orozco cousins grew up so very close.  Even though there are a ton of us (25 first cousins on my dads side to be exact) with ages ranging from pre-teen to the thirties, we still make it a point to get together whenever we can and we have a blast.  There’s usually music involved… a lot of dancing… a lot of laughing… and a beer or two.  Congratulations Nathan!

My beautiful aunties Shell & Steph

Rudo likes to play DJ anytime he is hanging with uncle Jude!

This is one of the best pictures I’ve ever taken of Dom and Ang.  Domonic totally looks like our mama in this picture!

and beautiful Marisa.  She sat down and told me why she loves each one of her 4 brothers individually.  I wish they could have heard it :)

Lisa also had her baby shower!  She looked so happy and beautiful as always.  It was so good to see her grandma, mom and sis!  We can’t wait to meet baby Zamora!  I think it’s going to be a little girl :)

Uncle Jack, auntie Anna and the whole Martinez clan were in town but we missed them.  If only it could have been a 5-day weekend… the good news is that we’ll be celebrating my 30th birthday in Denver in October so we will see all of you soon!  Love you.

Now on to July…

Amazing Grace

This past weekend my mother-in-law Grace celebrated her 70th birthday!  As you can imagine, this was a pretty big deal in the Roybal house.  We began planning Grace’s birthday festivities a few months ago and thankfully everything turned out great!  We mauled over possible themes and ended up going with a hot pink, black and Zebra print motif.  Anyone who knows Grace can attest to the fact that she is super girly, a little sassy and loves animal print which she often wears.  Little did I know that this color scheme is quite popular right now so finding decorations was a lot easier than we thought it would be.

Our cousin Harold was nice enough to reserve the banquet room at his bar & grill for the shin dig and with the help of Dean and Chris, we were able to make the table arrangements and other d├ęcor we couldn’t find in the store.  Everything from the people who drove and flew in, to the cake, to the slideshow, was absolutely perfect!  Georgia spent about a week scanning in photos and collecting pictures from Grace’s sisters to put in the slideshow.  It turned out so good it actually made Dean cry (which is something I’ve never seen him do in 5 years)!  The guests really seemed to love the pictures we chose for the table arrangements many of which were of Grace, George and their closest friends and family 50+ years ago :)

Grace spent the evening laughing and enjoying delicious food!  She worked the room from the moment the party began until the last guest said goodbye.  She thanked us all night, gave about a million hugs and shed a tear or two.  None of this surprised me because when it comes to things my mother-in-law loves, visiting with friends and family is at the top of the list!  She really couldn’t have looked any happier!

Happy 70th Birthday Grace!  Cheers to the next 70!

Celebrate without fireworks NM!

A message from Congressman Heinrich…

This 4th of July, as we gather with friends and family in celebration of our nation, please make safety a priority. Specifically, I’d like to caution you against using fireworks of any kind this year.
With wildfires burning throughout our state, it is more important than ever for each of us to do our part in protecting our treasured natural resources and communities from more unintended fires. I commend the hundreds of brave men and women who are on the ground fighting the New Mexico wildfires. Please join me in spreading the word on how to stay safe this weekend, and throughout the fire season.

Here are a few wildfire safety tips:

·         Do not use fireworks of any kind.
·         Use caution and common sense before lighting any fire.
·         Understand that any fire you create could become a wildfire.
·         Never, ever leave any fire unattended.
·         Properly extinguish and discard smoking materials.
·         Be aware of your surroundings and careful when operating equipment during periods of dry or hot weather.
·         Speak up and step in when you see someone in danger of starting a wildfire.

Common ways you could unintentionally start a wildfire:

·         Unattended debris burning
·         Equipment fires such as from lawnmowers, ATVs, power equipment
·         Smoking
·         Unattended campfires
·         Children playing with matches or lighters
·         Fireworks

I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and fun holiday. It is an honor to represent you in Congress. My staff and I are here to serve you, and I urge you to contact me anytime.

Be well and keep in touch --

Member of Congress

Bucket List #8 Take a fishing trip to Isleta Lakes

This past weekend Georgia and I packed up the camper (and the boys) and headed to Isleta Lakes for a short staycation.  Prior to adding this location to my bucket list, I had never even heard of Isleta Lakes which I know is ridiculous considering its 20 minutes from the house.  We had such a GREAT time!  The landscape was beautiful, there were plenty of fish and we even made friends with the neighbors!

Rudy and Devin had an absolute blast but to be completely honest I could park the camper behind a Wal-Mart and they would be as happy as can be.  The boys love the camper and would hang out in it all day if we let them.  We spent our first evening at the lake fishing, grilling, jamming to some tunes and enjoying the city lights.  My mom came down to eat with us and ended up staying the night!

Nani and the boys woke up super early Sunday morning to catch some fish.  Rudy was ready to go with his fancy new fishing pole that Nani gave him and Devin couldn’t be happier with the tackle box and fishing pole we gave him for his birthday.  Georgia and I opted to sleep in and pass on the early morning fishing trip, but as fate would have it – plans changed.  Just as I was falling back asleep I could hear my mom screaming from across the lake shouting “GIRLS, GIRLS Rudy caught a fish”!!!  We jumped out of bed, threw on our clothes and went to check it out.  Not only was this the first time Rudy ever caught a fish, the fish was huge!  He was so proud of himself and so were we.  We took about 100 pictures :)

The sweet Grandpa next door taught us how to fillet the fish!

I love Rudy’s face in this picture :)

Sunday afternoon Grace, George and Ozzie joined us for some Father’s Day fishing.  George came equipped with his fly fishing pole and vintage tackle box which made him look like quite the pro!  After breakfast, we all headed down to the lake to picnic while George and Rudy fished.  Right around the time Rudy caught his third fish; Georgia leaned over to me and said “my dad is so stubborn; he’s never going to catch anything with the fly fishing rod”!  I’m not joking when I say that at that exact moment he caught his first fish!  I think he had a great Father’s Day.

I hope all you other papas had a good one too!

Devin and Rudy decided that this is something we’re going to have to do every year for Devin’s birthday.  I think we just might :)
