23 Weeks

I realized this morning that it’s been 3 weeks since my last baby post so I have a bit of catching up to do.  So much has happened in the past 3 weeks, it’s been nuts.  I guess the best place to start would be our follow-up OB appt.  Because we weren’t able to see Gracie’s face during our first ultrasound we had a follow-up appointment last week.  Not only were we unable to see her little face again, but this time she was curled up in a ball like a rollie pollie!  In our last appointment her face was planted in G’s placenta and this time her legs and her arms were crossed over her face.  Our ultrasound tech said that some babies are just more snuggly than others and she is definitely a snuggler!  Our tech showed us all the space that Grace has to stretch her legs but our little one just prefers to cuddle.  The great news is that she is measuring right on track, her heartbeat is strong and she has become super active in the past 3 weeks!

We had a visit from brother bear and Chris for Thanksgiving and this time they were able to stay for nearly a week.  It was a great visit.  As I posted last week, Grandpa George, Dean and Chris painted the nursery and it came out great!  The painting is done and George is going to install the new fan in the next week or two.  Not only did we make progress on the baby room, but after searching for baby furniture at every single store in town, we found our crib and dresser/book shelf!  With it being black Friday we purchased everything earlier than we had planned to.  We just couldn’t pass up on the great deals :)

A Roybal Thanksgiving!

Sneak peak of the nursery!

Two walls are a Tiffany turquoise and the other two are white.

Below is a picture of our crib!  We were looking for something in a dark cherry wood that could convert into a toddler bed, and while I thought this would be easy to find we ended up visiting about 10 places in total.  Nearly every crib we came across was huge and had bulky headboard looking things on the back.  After much searching we came across this crib and fell in love!  We loved the color and the fact that it’s solidly built and not gigantic.  My moms gift to us is the crib so special thanks to Nani :)

My BF Sara had her baby shower on Saturday which was so much fun.  It was great to see all the High School homies and to shower Sara and baby Olivia with love and tons of gifts!  I’m so excited that Grace and Olivia are only going to be 6 weeks apart.  Sara and I have already begun to talk about family trips we will one day take together and the girls aren’t even here yet.  First up, Disneyland!  Sara and I have been close friends for 20+ years and have been through so much together so it was pretty wonderful to share in this special day with her!

Me and Sal with the soon-to-be mamas :)

In other related news – we’ll be 6 months tomorrow!  This pregnancy is just flying by!

How your baby’s growing: 23 Weeks

Turn on the radio and sway to the music.  With her sense of movement well developed by now, your baby can feel you dance.  And now that she’s more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound (about as much as a large mango), you may be able to see her squirm underneath your clothes.  Blood vessels in her lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that your baby’s increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing her for entry into the outside world.  Loud noises that become familiar now – such as your dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner – probably won’t faze her when she hears them outside the womb.

Crock Pot Cookin: Green Chile Roast

Okay friends, this is seriously the easiest and fastest crock-pot recipe I’ve ever made and bonus – it’s super good too!  My new barometer for crock-pot success is whether or not preggers (aka Georgia) actual eats the entire meal.  I am happy to report that not only did she eat her green chile roast, she finished eating before me!  I was quite proud of myself :)  The ingredients are pretty basic and you have a lot of options when it comes to what kind of meal you want.  We went with green chile roast burritos but you can also do green chile roast tacos/tostados, roast on rice, green chile roast lettuce wraps… you get the idea.  It only took me about five minutes to put everything together and when I got home from work all I had to do was shred the meat with two forks and it was dinner time.  The total cost for the meal was approximately $13.00.

If you give this recipe a go, let me know how it turns out!

What you’ll need ~

- 3lb beef or pork roast
- 1 can of Rotel tomatoes with green chiles (use the can to add half a can of water)
- 3/4 cup green chile
- Garlic salt and pepper to taste
- Low carb tortillas

The fixings ~

Light sour cream - Diced tomatoes - Diced onions - Salsa - Reduced fat cheese

What to do ~

3 quart crock-pot

1. Cut roast into 4 pieces

2. Spray the inside of your crock-pot with pam.  Add beef, Rotel tomatoes, water and green chile

3. Add garlic salt and pepper to taste then mix ingredients

4. Cook 10hrs/low or 5hrs/high (I forgot to add this important little detail when I originally post this… thanks for catching it Cissy!)

and that’s it!  Easy right?

Bucket List #4 Denver trip part II

My one birthday wish on this trip was to have a family dinner at my uncle Jack and auntie Anna’s new Jack-n-Grill location.  Not only did this happen, but the family surprised us with an unbelievable birthday party and baby shower in one!  Because we were expecting a small dinner with the family we were shocked to walk in and find an entire section of the restaurant blocked off and decorated from head-to-toe!  Everything looked so great.

My aunty Anna really outdid herself this time.  There were balloons, table decorations, a huge assortment of cakes, cookies and other sweets, party favors and gifts galore!  I almost cried when I looked over and noticed a baby shower section of the party complete with, pink rose petals, baby girl balloons, beautiful flowers and gifts for Gracie.  Laid across the front of the table was an adorable Dallas Cowboy jersey onesie with a cute little pink bow :)

It was so great to visit and laugh with my cousins who I haven’t seen in forever and to see all their kiddos that have grown so big!  The food was seriously amazing – I had to take a break from the diet because there were just too many delicious options that I simply couldn’t pass up.  I think I forgot how scrumptious the food is but after Georgia and I sampled pretty much everything on the menu we could totally understand why Jack-n-Grill has been featured on the Travel Channel and has been a “Best of Denver” winner so many times!

I loved the cake and goodies my auntie Anna got us from her favorite bakery.
She’s the best!

Following the party we all headed downtown to do a little celebrating!  We spent the evening dancing the night away at Wicked Garden.  The costumes that people were wearing were amazing!  The whole night I was running to find Georgia to show her every costume I came across and she was doing the same :)

Okay, so apparently we took a lot of pictures on this trip.  I’m just now realizing how long this (my second Denver post) is thus far.  Stick with me people… I’m almost done!  Denver/First NFL game post part III coming soon :)

What I am thankful for today.

Delicious grilled chicken sandwich leftovers that my poor prego wife couldn’t eat.

Feeling baby girl kick and turn and twirl everyday now.

Surviving my back-to-back Monday team meetings.

Grocery shopping because had I waited another day, we would have had to eat one of the dogs.

My mother-in-law who calls to check on us and baby every night.

The Dallas Cowboys for finally having a BIG win.

Our niece Mia, just because she smells so good.

20 weeks & some baby Q&A

:: Georgia @ 20 weeks ::

We’re halfway there already, woot, woot!  As promised in week 16, below are some questions from G to me in this our 20th week :)

According to K…

We recently found out we are having a girl… how did you feel about the new discovery?  I was shocked and so blissfully happy!  In month 5, I felt like everyone I asked thought that we were having a boy.  I think that after hearing this from everyone, all the time, I started to think we were having a boy too.  When the ultrasound tech said that we were having a girl it was a total surprise!

Has it been hard juggling the housework with Georgia out of commission?  Things have gotten so much easier now that G is feeling better.  I can see a complete change in her energy level, which I think is in large part due to the fact that she has an appetite again and she’s sleeping much better.  This past month she would get boosts of energy and clean like a crazy person on the weekends.  I’m not sure if it’s early signs of nesting but I’m lovin it ;)

Tell us what you did in month 4 to prepare for baby girls arrival?  We started purchasing cloth diapers (finally!)  The original plan was to buy 1-2 cloth diapers each paycheck in our first tri but we kept putting it off and then I started to panic because we hadn’t purchased a single diaper as we approached the halfway point.  We visited the cutest little shop called the Giggling Green Bean and purchased some XS and Small sizes that are ADORABLE!  I also started saving for maternity leave.  I’m only going to have enough sick/vacation time to receive a paycheck for the first month of mat leave so I’ve started a baby fund so that I can take the full 3 months off, paid.  Looks like we’re going to be eating beans for the next couple of months, hehe!

I had to post this picture!  Seriously, how cute are these?!  It makes me so happy to know that Grace is going to have something that is all natural and chemical free on her little tush and that her diapers aren’t going to be in a landfill for the next 400 years like mine… bonus – going cloth is going to save us a ton of money too!  If you’re considering cloth but not sure, you should read this post on our friend Elena’s blog.  She has become quite the pro when it comes to cloth diapering.

Share a few milestones that have occurred in month 4?  Well, we found out that we are having a girl, which was huge, and we hit the halfway point in the pregnancy!  Also, (I’m not sure if this would be considered a milestone), but we had a small scare with G’s glucose test.  The results came back showing that there was a chance that she could have gestational diabetes so she had to complete a 2nd 3-hour test to determine if she did or not.  Thankfully the second test came back showing that everything was normal and that she was perfectly healthy.  We were both really stressed about it and so relieved to get the good news!

Have you felt baby girl move yet?  Yes!  I think?  The times that I’ve thought I felt Gracie move have been early in the morning and at night right before going to bed.  It seems that every time I get excited thinking that I felt something, G immediately says that it was just her shifting, or moving.  Hopefully we will soon feel something a little more definitive.  The good news is that my sis-in-law gave us a heart rate monitor so even though we have yet to feel a lot of movement, we at least get to hear baby girl :)
What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?  I’m really excited for our next ultrasound appointment where we will get more pictures of the baby.  I love any opportunity to see her beautiful face.  I’m also eager to start on the nursery.  I think that the plan is to start choosing paint for the walls in the next week or two.

We’re 21 weeks tomorrow!

How your baby’s growing: 20 Weeks

Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now.  She’s also around 6 1/2 inches from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel – the length of a banana.  (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby’s legs are curled up against her torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the rump of her head to her bottom – the “crown to rump” measurement.  After 20 weeks, she’s measured from head to toe.)

She’s swallowing more these days, which is good practice for her digestive system.  She’s also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion.  This gooey substance will accumulate in her bowels, and you’ll see it in her first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery.)

Bucket List #4 Celebrate my dirty 30 in Denver!

That’s right… I’m officially 30 years old!  While I initially thought that leaving my 20’s would be depressing, to tell you the truth, this birthday was the best I’ve had in all of my life.  From getting the amazing news that we’re going to have a baby girl to dinner at Vernon’s Steak House (seriously delicious food), to being spoiled by my co-workers and partying it up at our house party – it was a week full of unforgettable events.  I would have to say that Denver was the perfect end to end a perfect week.

Anthony and I at the office :)

We decided to go to Denver for my dirty 30th because I hadn’t visited in more than a decade and I really wanted to spend my bday with my aunt, uncle and cousins that live out there, otherwise known as the Martinez fam.  Before getting to do this, we of course had to take a quick plane ride… and what a ride it was. First we witnessed a busy mom with 3 kids lean her hiking backpack (with baby in pack) up against a wall --- the pack then proceeded to fall forward face planting the poor child into the ground.  I witnessed it happen in what felt like slow motion but despite my attempt to sprint to the kiddo, I didn’t get there fast enough :(  luckily she was ok.  While this was traumatizing, it in no way prepared me for what happened next.  With it being my bday flight and all, the first thing I did was order a bloody mary (obviously.)  As G and I tried to set up her ipad and headphones to watch a movie, I somehow dumped my FULL drink right onto my lap.  Yup, true story.  I just stared at the bloody mess for a few seconds in absolute disbelief before jumping up and using my tiny cocktail napkin to clean up the mess.  Did I mention that the seatbelt sign was still on and we were only about 15 minutes into the flight?!

Because it was my birthday trip, our nice flight attendant brought me another drink/sippy cup with a lid just incase I had another spill.  Not my finest moment ;)

On our first night we were joined by G’s BF, Jackie and her friend Justin for a little sushi dinner.  The food was delish and the neighborhood was super cute.  We ended the day getting settled in our rental home, which was amazing.  I’m telling you, hotels are out – rental homes are the way to go!

Our cute casita for the week.  I loved it!

For our first day in Denver, Georgia wanted to take me on a tour of the Coors Brewing Factory.  I didn’t even know that Coors was located in Colorado but who was I to pass up a beer tour and how awesome is my wife for wanting to take me to a brewing factory when she is unable to join in the festivities?!  I’m telling you, she’s a keeper.  The tour was basically a very cool, FREE drink fest coupled with some history of Golden Colorado.  If you’re ever in the Denver area I would highly recommend it.

As if it’s not awesome enough that Coors gives you beer as you go through the tour, you finish in a downstairs pub where you’re encouraged to sample all their beers from Keystone (HELLO college) to Blue Moon.  It was a fantastic adventure :)

Georgia sampled a little non-alcoholic traditional Coors brew.

On our way home I took Georgia to see my uncle Jack and auntie Anna’s first Jack-n-Grill location.  It was so great to see the restaurant again but even more amazing to see their newest location.  They have grown so much in the last 10 years.  I’m so proud of everything they've done.

Speaking of family, they did so many wonderful things for us while we were in Denver.  Dinner party, baby shower, night on the town AND they took us to our first NFL game!  It’s all just too much for one post.  More on our Denver vacation coming soon.
